What is an ISO standard?
The ISO organization, based in Geneva, Switzerland, develops and publishes industry Standards, such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
ISO standards are internationally agreed on by experts.
Think of a Standard as a Requirements manual that describes the best way of performing an activity. For example, ISO 9001 quality management Standard requirements that are effectively applied to an organization provide for a formal management system structure that consistently supplies products and/or services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements and aims to enhance customer satisfaction. An ISO 9001-based management system provides continual improvement, emphasizing defect prevention and the reduction of variation and waste in the supply chain. Likewise, ISO 14001 Environmental management standards to help reduce environmental impacts, reduce waste and be more sustainable. ISO 45001 occupational health and safety standards to help reduce accidents in the workplace.

While the ISO organization is a non-profit entity that develops and publishes industry Standards, such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, they are not involved in the certification process, and do not issue certificates. This must be performed by external, accredited certification bodies.
